ZAKYNTHOS

Zakynthos, or "Zante," or Fioro of the Levant according to the Venetians, is one of
the islands of the Ionian Islands. It is the eleventh largest island in Greece, as well as the third
in area and second in population island in the Eptanisa Islands. Its population amounts to
41,180 inhabitants.

The bay of Laganas, with its magnificent beach, has been declared National Park since 1999
as it is a nesting ground for the endangered Caretta caretta turtle. The western coasts have a length of about 34 kilometers, are rocky and steep forming with
many caves and creeks. Conversely, the east coasts are facing the
Peloponnese and are 37 kilometers long, they are sandy with beautiful beaches. The climate of Zakynthos is mild Mediterranean with several rains from November to
January and great sunshine all year round. It has rich vegetation and is an island with
important agricultural production, based mainly on the cultivation of olives,
citrus fruits and raisins as well as flowers.

Significant business activity is also developing, mainly in the sector
of tourism, which is supported by Dionysios Solomos Airport and many
hotel units and accommodation, taking advantage of the natural beauties and
historical tradition, combined with the hospitality of the residents.

Zakynthos is considered an island with a long musical tradition. Zakynthians are warm
Music lovers and often form caliphonic groups - groups that sing old times
local songs and mainly carols. It is also the island with the second largest
tradition in the philharmonics in the Ionian Islands, after Corfu.

Since 2009, Zakynthos has had its own jazz festival (Zante Jazz Festival) as well as classical music festivals. It is worth mentioning that Zakynthos
has the oldest Philharmonic in Greece which was founded on May 1, 1816.
